IFS Therapy

What is IFS Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is an evidence‑based model of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. It is based on the understanding that our personality is made up of different "parts," each with its own perspective, feelings, and role.

Some parts may try to protect us, while others carry hurt from the past. These parts can become stuck in extreme roles or beliefs, often because of earlier life experiences. At the heart of IFS is the Self, a calm, compassionate, and wise centre within each of us that can heal and harmonise these parts. When we begin to listen to our parts with curiosity and kindness, deep healing can unfold.

Every relationship is influenced by the family systems of both partners—past and present. Hidden dynamics from the family of origin, past relationships, or unresolved personal and generational traumas can lead to tension, conflict, or emotional distance between partners.

Couples Constellations reveals these underlying influences, giving couples the chance to understand how past traumas and family patterns may be affecting their relationship. By bringing these hidden forces to light, couples can heal emotional wounds, break free from repeating patterns, and build a more harmonious and supportive connection.

Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply want to enhance your connection, Couples Constellations offers a transformative path towards a more fulfilling partnership.

Goals of IFS Therapy

IFS Therapy supports you in:

  • Deepening trust in your inner Self, the compassionate presence that brings clarity and leadership

  • Discovering the roles your parts play and understanding their positive intent

  • Liberating parts burdened by pain, fear, or trauma

  • Promoting harmony and balance within your internal system

  • Enhancing emotional resilience, self‑understanding, and relational ease

This approach fosters emotional healing, personal integration, and a deeper sense of inner peace.

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

IF sessions take place in a calm and respectful environment. We begin by identifying your most active parts, perhaps parts that criticise, worry, protect, or withdraw. Through gentle exploration, you learn to meet these parts with curiosity, not judgment.

As trust grows, more vulnerable parts may reveal themselves—often those holding old wounds or intense emotions. With the Self's compassionate presence, these parts can release their burdens and shift back into healthy roles.
