Inner Child Healing

What is Inner Child Healing?

Inner Child Healing offers a gentle and compassionate approach to understanding and healing emotional wounds that may have developed during childhood. Many of our present difficulties, such as anxiety, low self esteem, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, or feelings of not being good enough, can have their roots in earlier experiences.

When we experience difficult or overwhelming events during childhood, such as separation, loss, emotional, physical or sexual abuse, rejection, neglect, violence, or other traumatic experiences, our nervous system attempts to protect us from becoming overwhelmed. In these moments, the developing brain separates overwhelming emotions, memories, and experiences in order to help us survive.

This fragmentation is a natural survival response. During overwhelming situations, our higher brain functions responsible for reflection, time, and perspective become less available as the nervous system moves into survival states such as fight, flight, freeze, or collapse. Parts of us can become emotionally stuck at the age when these experiences occurred, continuing to carry the feelings, beliefs, and emotional pain connected to them.

This is one reason why we speak about the "inner child." In reality, there is not only one inner child. Different parts of ourselves may hold experiences from different stages of childhood, depending on when difficult events occurred. One part may carry fear, another sadness, another shame or loneliness, or feelings of not being good enough.

These younger parts can continue to influence our thoughts, emotions, relationships, and responses throughout our lives, often without us fully understanding why we react in certain ways.

Inner Child Healing helps us reconnect with these younger parts with compassion and understanding. By bringing awareness and compassion to the emotional wounds they carry, acknowledging what happened, and supporting their integration, healing can gradually take place.

How does it work?

My approach integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), Family Constellations, Identity-Oriented Psychotrauma Therapy (IoPT), and body based approaches that support the regulation of the nervous system.

During the sessions, we explore the younger parts that may be carrying emotional pain, unmet needs, or difficult experiences. At the same time, we work with the protective parts that have developed to help us cope and survive.

Attention is given not only to thoughts and emotions but also to bodily sensations and the responses of the nervous system. This can help develop greater awareness, emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of safety.

The aim is not to relive the past, but to understand and support these younger parts with compassion and curiosity. As these parts begin to feel seen, understood, and connected, greater emotional balance, self understanding, and integration can gradually take place.
